Uploading a score
Supported formats, size limits, and what to do when a file is rejected.
Supported formats
| Format | Extension | When you have one |
|---|---|---|
| MusicXML | .musicxml | The default export of MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale and Dorico |
| MusicXML | .xml | Older exports, and programs that use the generic extension |
| Compressed MusicXML | .mxl | A zipped MusicXML document: smaller, and what most sites offer for download |
All three are the same music. A .mxl file is a .musicxml file in a ZIP container; Annotune unpacks it for you.
How to import
- Open New score from the sidebar.
- Drop the file onto the upload area, or click it to open your file browser.
- Annotune checks the file type, its size and the structure of the document.
- The editor opens with your score in it.
If you would rather paste the document than upload it, choose the manual-entry link below the upload area and paste the MusicXML text.
Limits
- A single score may be up to 5 MB of MusicXML.
- A .mxl archive may be up to 6 MB, and must unpack to no more than 6 MB.
- All your scores together may use up to 100 MB.
If your file is rejected
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| That file type is not supported | The extension is not .musicxml, .xml or .mxl. Re-export from your notation program as MusicXML. |
| This file is not a MusicXML document | The file is XML, but not a score. A MusicXML document starts with score-partwise or score-timewise. |
| This MusicXML document could not be read | The file is damaged, or it uses a document type declaration, which Annotune refuses for security reasons. |
| This .mxl archive could not be opened | The ZIP is damaged, or it contains no MusicXML document. |
| You have used all your score storage | Delete a score you no longer need from the Library, then try again. |
Annotune refuses documents that declare an XML DOCTYPE. That is a deliberate restriction: it is the mechanism behind entity-expansion attacks, and no MusicXML file needs one. Re-exporting from your notation program produces a file without it.
