How to read the circle

  • Clockwise, each key is a fifth higher and adds one sharp (or removes a flat).
  • Counter-clockwise, each key is a fifth lower and adds one flat.
  • Each outer major key shares its key signature with the minor key directly inside it: its relative minor.
  • Neighbouring keys differ by one accidental, which makes them the most natural keys to modulate to.
